It is about looking out for the early signs of cancer.
The quicker you can spot it, the earlier you can start treatment which can help you get better.
Cancer screening is for people who feel fine and might not see it.
If you notice something different, tell your doctor as soon as possible.
Cervical Screening: smear test
A smear test is also called cervical screening.
Your cervix is inside your body at the top of the vulva, you cannot see it.
The smear test looks for a virus in the cervix called Human papillomavirus (HPV).
For a small number of women this virus can make the cells in the cervix go wrong and cause cancer.
You can find out more about having a smear test by watching the Ñý¾«¶¯Âþ and Sussex Cancer Alliance video.
