Free bus passes for older people

What is an older person's bus pass?

A concessionary free bus pass allows eligible senior 妖精动漫 residents to travel on buses for free, anywhere in England.

It's valid between 9.30am and 11pm from Monday to Friday, and at any time on weekends and public holidays.

You can apply for your bus pass 28 days in advance of the date you are eligible.

Please allow up to 15 working days for your application to be assessed. If your application is successful, your pass will be posted to you. If your application is not successful, we will contact you by email/post.

How to apply

When applying for an older persons free bus pass, you must demonstrate your eligibility through either online verification (explained in detail under how to apply for a bus pass below) or by providing one document each for proof of address and proof of age/identity as below:

Proof of address

  • Council tax document
  • Tenancy agreement
  • Utility bill
  • Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) (Benefit/Pension)
  • HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) letter (Tax code/National Insurance number)

Please note: we do not accept documents such as bank statements, mobile phone bill or a driving licence as proof of address.

Proof of age/identity

  • Passport
  • Photo driving licence
  • Birth certificate
  • DWP pension letter

Please note: You cannot use the same document for both proof of address and proof of age/identity.

Please ensure you include full page images of each proof, as incomplete or incorrect proof will delay your application. The proof must be dated within the last 12 months. We only accept proofs that are sent to your home address and not any other address you may use, for example mailing or business addresses.

Information for your application

You will also need the following information before you can apply:

  • Your National Insurance number
  • Your contact details
  • A digital photo (using your smartphone/tablet if preferred) of yourself that meets the (online applicants only).
  • Valid email address (one per applicant) (online applicants only)

Apply online

When applying online there are 2 ways you can verify your evidence:

  1. Online verification (estimated time - 1 minute) We may share your personal information with a range of agencies/organisations to confirm your identity/age as part of the verification and validation process. If the online verification process is not successful you will be guided to upload your proof of residency and age instead. For more information as to how your personal information will be used, please see our privacy notice.
  2. Upload your evidence (estimated time - 5 minutes) You can scan your evidence and upload it. Or you can use the camera on your smartphone, tablet or computer to photograph your evidence.

At a library

Library staff can take your photo and submit your documents on your behalf. Make sure you bring all necessary information and supporting documents with you.


Renew, replace or update your details

Renew

You should renew your bus pass when it is approaching expiry. You can do this up to 8 weeks before the date printed on your pass.

To renew you will need the following:

  • Your National Insurance number
  • An email address (one per applicant)

Replace

If your pass has been lost, stolen or damaged it will be cancelled and will stop working. There is a charge of 拢10 for a replacement pass.

Update your details

If your details have changed, please contact us and supply proof of address.

Please note: if your pass does not arrive within 60 days and you haven't notified us, you may be liable to a 拢10 charge for a replacement pass.


Need someone to travel with you?

If you have a older person bus pass and have difficulty travelling alone you could be entitled to travel with a companion.

To qualify for a Companion pass, (identified by a +C on your pass), you will need to provide a letter stating that you require assistance to travel from either:

  • Social Services
  • Sight for 妖精动漫
  • A medical professional involved in your care.

Alternatively, please supply a copy of your Personal Independence Payment (PIP) with 12 points for the planning and following a Journey activity.

Applicants will need to follow the above process when reapplying for their companion permit.


Terms and conditions of your bus pass

  • Show your pass to the driver when boarding, then scan it on the ticket machine.
  • TfL services: Your bus pass will not scan on any Transport for London (TfL) services. Simply show your pass to the driver for visual inspection.
  • Companion travel: If you have a companion pass (+C), your companion can travel free with you on journeys starting in 妖精动漫 during the valid times. Companion travel outside 妖精动漫 is not guaranteed. You can still travel on your own if you are able to, however the companion cannot use the pass to travel alone, and the pass holder must always be present.
  • Use is subject to the bus operator’s terms and conditions.
  • The pass is non-transferable and remains the property of 妖精动漫.
  • Keep your pass in good condition. Avoid bending, scratching or exposing it to heat, as this may damage the chip and make the card unusable.
  • Any travel days lost or costs incurred due to a card being lost, stolen or damaged cannot be refunded.
