Course intent

Do you want to make a quilt? In this course you will learn and practice the basic skills required to successfully work in patchwork & quilting. You will begin your journey by developing your designing and sewing skills. You will be shown the techniques to make a quilt. We will also explore exciting quilt designs and be inspired for future projects.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

Design Techniques: You’ll learn how to use colours, and how to combine basic units to make beautiful quilts. You'll explore various styles and trends while also focusing on your personal taste.

Material Knowledge: Gain insights into different materials used. Understanding different materials will allow you to make informed choices that suit your designs

Craftsmanship: Develop your understanding of the tools and techniques required. This course will help you sharpen and perfect skills while learning new techniques.

Production Process: Understand the process of turning a basic unit of design into a physical object, including cutting, sewing, and finishing techniques

Workshop Practice: Understand the importance of a safe working environment and H&S requirements.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Stage 1 –This stage is for learners who are new to their chosen subject area. With the focus on introducing individuals to basic materials, tools, and techniques, and to inspire confidence in creative expression.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring:

Fabric – at least 3 quarter metres in 3 different shades – matching or contrasting colours

o 25cm a light colour

o 25cm of a medium colour

o 25cm dark in colour

o You will need more as your ideas develop

Equipment:

large sharp scissors for fabric cutting

scissors for paper cutting

small snipping scissors

pins & needles

thread

propelling pencil (because they’re always sharp)

accurate ruler

Materials & machinery needed during the course will be discussed in the first few lessons.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto Stage 2, specific one-day workshops or further Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
