Course intent

Discover the wonderful versatility of embroidery in this creative workshop led by a professional embroiderer and Royal School of Needlework (RSN) trained tutor. You will explore new techniques and be guided in developing your own design ideas through to completion.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

Design Techniques: Learn how to sketch your ideas, understand key design principles, and refine your concepts. You will also cover essential preparation techniques such as framing fabric and transferring your designs

Material Knowledge: Gain insight into a variety of materials used in embroidery. Understanding their properties will help you make informed choices that best support your design ideas

Craftsmanship: Build your understanding of essential tools and techniques. This course will introduce new methods to help you focus on craftsmanship

Production Process: Learn how to transform a design into a finished piece by mastering the most used stitching techniques

Workshop Practice: Understand the importance of a safe working environment and H&S requirements

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Stage 1 – This stage is for learners who are new to their chosen subject area. With the focus on introducing individuals to basic materials, tools, and techniques, and to inspire confidence in creative expression.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring:

  • a pencil and notebook
  • some light-coloured cotton fabric (eg calico)
  • a variety of stranded cottons or other sewing threads
  • some different sized needles
  • embroidery scissors
  • an embroidery hoop (preferably 8-inch but any size is acceptable)

These items and other optional equipment will be available to purchase on the day at additional cost

What can I do when I finish the course?

  • In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto Stage 2, specific one-day Workshops or further Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
