Course intent

Get ready to broaden your knowledge & skills in patchwork and quilting. There is so much more to learn – be excited! Learners will extend their patchwork and quilting knowledge and will gain skill and confidence to start designing your own interesting and creative quilts and projects

What will I learn?

You will learn:

Design Techniques: Learn how to turn ideas into practice. You'll explore various styles and trends being inspired to follow your own style. You can work by hand or machine, or both.

Material Knowledge: Gain insights into different materials used. Understanding different materials will allow you to make informed choices that suit your designs

Craftsmanship: Further develop your understanding of the tools and techniques required. This course will help you sharpen and perfect skills while learning new techniques LIKE English paper piecing & foundation piecing

Production Process: Understand the process of turning a design into a physical object, including cutting, sewing, and finishing techniques

Workshop Practice: Understand the importance of a safe working environment and H&S requirements.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Stage 2 - Suitable for learners who have completed stage 1 and would like to gain more experience and refine their skills within their chosen subject area. The focus will be on developing more control and proficiency in practice and learning and completing more complex projects.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring:

fabrics and threads to complete your individual projects

basic sewing equipment such as:

  • pins
  • needles
  • scissors
  • tape measure etc
  • additional fabrics for testing and trailing techniques and machine stitches
  • notepad, pen and pencil

Rotary cutting equipment and sewing machines belonging to the centre are available to use during the course.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto Stage 3, specific one-day workshops or further Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
