Course intent

Discover the fascinating world of clocks and clock repair. Be introduced to various types of clocks and their mechanisms, learn how to identify common faults, and carry out repairs using a range of techniques. You will also learn how to clean and reassemble clocks as you work towards restoring them to full working order.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • Material Knowledge: How clocks work, from mechanical movements to escapements and get familiar with the essential tools and materials used in clock repair.
  • Craftsmanship: How to properly clean, oil, and assemble clock mechanisms to restore them to working order with care and precision.
  • Production Process: Gain hands-on experience in safely dismantling and reassembling clocks, following standard procedures for diagnosing and repairing common issues.
  • Workshop Practice: Focus on safe techniques and procedures for clock repair.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Stage 1 – This stage is for learners who are new to their chosen subject area. With the focus on introducing individuals to basic materials, tools, and techniques, and to inspire confidence in creative expression.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring:

  • A clock with a wind-up mechanism and pendulum
  • Plastic boxes with sealable lids to put parts in
  • Any tools you might have (screwdrivers, pliers, tweezers, small spanner(s) or an adjustable spanner etc.)
  • A notebook and pen
  • Closed toe shoes
  • An apron or wear old clothes

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto Clock Repair & Horology – Stage 2 or further Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
