Course intent

Painting with watercolours can feel daunting when you are not sure where to begin. This course will you to painting in watercolours. You will learn skills, experiment and be given practical information which you will then use to paint a landscape or still life from photograph our other source image.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

Material Knowledge: Gain confidence in using watercolour paints, laying washes, dry-brushing, working wet-in-wet and suggesting detail. We will discuss basic colour mixing both on the palette and inlayers on the paper.

Design Techniques: The use of tone and colour, planning how to use the white of the paper for the lightest tonal values in your pictures.

Production Process: Composition and some simple perspective.

Craftsmanship: Develop personal expression through a mixture of practice, discussion and

demonstration techniques.

  • Studio Practice: Work in a safe environment, following best practices for tool safety and maintaining an organized and efficient workspace.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Discover your artistic potential and have fun along the way. SAL workshops are suitable for beginners and those looking to improve their skills. All materials will be provided (unless stated in course description), and you'll leave with your own handmade creations. No prior experience is necessary鈥攋ust bring your creativity and enthusiasm!

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring:

  • Drawing pencils
  • A4 sketchbook
  • Watercolour brushes
  • A palette
  • A pad of watercolour paper (Cold pressed/NOT surface) weight 300gsm
  • A set of watercolour paints, pans rather than tubes if possible.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to enrol onto other Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
