Course intent

Believable characters can ignite interest in a story, keep readers turning the pages and audiences coming back for more.

In this workshop we will examine what makes characters seem ‘real’, and how to create them.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • The importance of character to story
  • How to ‘show not tell’ your character’s personality and feelings
  • The types of character in a story: protagonist, antagonists, sidekicks and more
  • How a character’s internal journey balances with the external action of the plot
  • How great dialogue can lift your character(s) off the page
  • Resources to use to find convincing character traits

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

All Abilities – specifically for those with some experience of writing as well as those who would like to develop their skills further.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

  • A pen and notebook

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto longer courses or enrol on our other Arts and Crafts courses.
