Course intent

Using clay and looking directly at your subject sculpt objects from observation in a still life situation. Create a piece of sculpture that you can be proud of whilst having lots of creative fun.

What will I learn?

  • How to turn objects in a still life into a finished sculpture
  • Basic processes of modelling and subtracting clay
  • Creating detail and taking the subject into a different, sculptural medium.
  • Refining your sculpture techniques to create a finished piece.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Anyone interested in learning techniques for sculpting objects in clay.

Beginners in sculpture, or a little experience in art, modelmaking, pottery etc.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

A sketchbook/notebook and pen.

Clothes for messy work. An apron or oversized shirt.

Sensible closed toe shoes.

Most consumable materials, such as clay are included in the course fees.

You will be advised of any further basic personal protection, such as gloves, eyewear, materials and tools by the tutor before the workshop.

Sculptures that require firing are limited to 20cm high.

What can I do when I finish the course?

You may like to continue on to a longer sculpture course to widen your knowledge and experience with other techniques, media and materials, to develop the breadth of skills that sculpture can bring.
