Course intent
This workshop is perfect for beginners or those returning to sewing after an introductory class. Whether you are starting a personal project or building on existing skills, the tutor will provide tailored support to help you progress at your own pace. Across the sessions, you will also learn by observing and sharing with others, gaining insight into a range of sewing techniques in a supportive, collaborative environment.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- How to choose the right pattern and fabric based on your project needs
- How to alter patterns and redesign garments to fit well and match your style
- How to use sewing machines and hand-sewing techniques to complete key tasks like seams, hems, fastenings, and zips
- Hand- and machine-sewing techniques suitable to complete your project
- Safety guidelines and keep your workspace clean and organized while you work
- How to finish your projects to a high standard
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Discover your artistic potential and have fun along the way. SAL workshops are suitable for beginners and those looking to improve their skills. All materials will be provided (unless stated in course description), and you will leave with your own handmade creations. No prior experience is necessary鈥攋ust bring your creativity and enthusiasm!
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
Fabric that you would like to use
Basic sewing kit
Fabric and paper scissors
Tape measure
Ruler
Dressmaking pins
Tracing wheel
Machine thread
Pencil, eraser and note pad
If you are a complete beginner, please bring some spare fabric for practising on the machine.
You are welcome to discuss your requirements with the tutor before the class starts.

What can I do when I finish the course?
In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto a longer course or enhance your learning on another Art & Craft course.

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
