Course intent

This course is aimed at those looking to build a basic understanding of draping as a foundation for garment making and pattern cutting. Through hands-on practice on the dress form, students will explore fabric manipulation in a three-dimensional space, helping them develop essential skills in design, fit, and construction.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to:

Drape an upper body block on the mannequin

Translate the block to a paper pattern

Drape a simple dress

Drape your unique design

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Discover your artistic potential and have fun along the way. SAL workshops are suitable for beginners and those looking to improve their skills. All materials will be provided (unless stated in course description), and you'll leave with your own handmade creations. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your creativity and enthusiasm!

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You will need:

• 2-3 metres medium-weight calico or similar fabric for draping the toile
• Dressmaking pins and pincushion. Ideally with a strap that can be fixed on your wrist
• Fabric and paper scissors
• A ruler
• Set squares & French curves
• A tape measure
• A tracing wheel (+Carbon paper if you have)
• A pencil (regular, red and blue)
• 1-metre elastic - 1.5-2.5 cm (1/2-1”) in width
• A notebook

No other extra costs.

What can I do when I finish the course?

On completion of the workshop, you may like to join other pattern cutting and dressmaking courses offered by �������� Adult Learning. Your tutor will advise on suitable courses.
