Course intent

Painting with oil paints can seem daunting if you don鈥檛 know where to start, this course will introduce you to painting in oils. You will learn skills, experiment and be given practical information which you will then use to paint a landscape or still life from photograph our other source image.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

Material Knowledge: Gain confidence in using painting mediums, learn techniques such as glazing, impasto, scumbling

Design Techniques: the use of tone, colour (including the labelling of paints and the Colour Index codes on the tubes)

Production Process: composition and perspective

Craftsmanship: Develop personal expression through a mixture of practice, discussion and demonstration techniques.

Studio Practice: Work in a safe environment, following best practices for tool safety and maintaining an organized and efficient workspace.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Discover your artistic potential and have fun along the way. SAL workshops are suitable for beginners and those looking to improve their skills. All materials will be provided (unless stated in course description), and you'll leave with your own handmade creations. No prior experience is necessary鈥攋ust bring your creativity and enthusiasm!

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

For this workshop session bring:

Whatever Oil materials you may already have purchased or a basic set of oil colours

Low odour brush cleaner (Sansodar) or Zestit solvent

Oil medium (linseed oil or liquin)

A tear off palette

Dipper (container) for solvents

3 flat or filbert hog hair brushes

Plenty of tissues, rags or newspaper

Oil sketching paper or a canvas or canvas board.

Pencil or pen

Note pad or sketchbook would be useful.

Materials will be discussed at the start of session. If you need advice on what to bring for the course, including if you want to work with water mixable oils, please email the tutor at adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk

Please bring a packed lunch

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to enrol onto other Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
