Works now complete

Access improvements are now complete on a well-loved stretch of the Basingstoke Canal. Works started in September, along a 3.4 kilometre section of towpath between Pirbright and Deepcut which underwent a much-needed upgrade. The project works were completed ahead of schedule in mid December with all works being made possible thanks to funding from developer contributions.

What has changed?

This stretch of towpath has long been in need of attention. From potholes and poor drainage, it hasn’t always been the easiest route — especially in wet weather. The improvements have enhanced the surface condition, improved drainage, and addressed canal bank erosion. The result is a more accessible and resilient path for year-round use by a wide range of visitors.

Access along the towpath

To carry out the work safely and efficiently, the towpath was closed between Locks 15 and 28  but is now fully open to the public.
