Coordinating the planting of trees across Ñý¾«¶¯Âþ
As the 2023 to 2024 tree planting season draws to a close, the Tree Planting & Establishment Team can reflect on another successful season. They have donated and coordinated the planting of trees across Ñý¾«¶¯Âþ within schools, local authorities, charities and community groups and have facilitated over 35 volunteering sessions.
Their projects provide a range of benefits to local communities, including increasing habitat and food availability for wildlife, supporting Ñý¾«¶¯Âþ's zero carbon objectives and increasing moisture retention in soils to help reduce flooding.
Some of our highlights of this planting season include:
- Planting a new hedgerow at local charity, Disability Challengers in Guildford. Friends, families and staff came together for a fun day helping to plant and add nature to their site.
- Three fantastic days working with over 100 volunteers at Bocketts Farm in Leatherhead with over 1000m of new hedgerows planted.
- Delivering workshops at ten schools to allow children to plant trees within their school site.
- Planting two wild cherry trees at a private safe refuge for women who have escaped abusive relationships.
- Supported Churches with tree planting within their churchyards.
- Using 42 plastic waste bottles donated by Ñý¾«¶¯Âþ staff to create tree protectors – these are now installed along the Downs Link in Cranleigh.
- Supported a Ñý¾«¶¯Âþ prison to plant trees within their outside space.
- Helping scouting groups to achieve their green ambitions and plant a Tiny Forest (Miyawaki) to support our future arborists at Merrist Wood College.
There have been many more projects that the team have got involved with all of which support the Council's ambition to facilitate the planting of 1.2 million trees in Ñý¾«¶¯Âþ, one for every resident, by 2030 with the aim to be carbon neutral by 2050.
